Liminal - Prints and Paintings by Eric Leroy Alleman

The Soap Gallery welcomes you to join us for 'Liminal', our first one man show featuring the talented Eric Leroy Alleman.

"I am trying to reconcile disparate thoughts, feelings and physical realities in me. Trying to find a balance between ability and disability, calm and chaos, useful and useless, valued and worthless. These are things I deal with everyday in my life so I deal with them in the work I make."

This show is an invitation to observe a captured moment in a long attempt to express an idea.

Eric will be transforming a portion of the gallery into a temporary studio, making new pieces and adding to the pieces displayed during the opening and periodically throughout month.

The show runs through the month of April.

James Thomas

James Thomas

This Cincinnati based artist and designer has his roots in Youngstown, Ohio. The work on display at the Soap Gallery are seductive mixed media pieces that allow for interpretation of one personal passion and curiosity behind each piece.

James Thomas's pieces will be accompanying the space with other expressionistic pieces in the Soap Gallery in February.

February 5-28, 2016

"I want this art statement to begin with a directed set of questions for you. I really want you to see what I want to show you. I want you to get it.

Let's start by thinking of your personal past experiences with attraction. It can be your significant other or even a not so significant other, it can even be a celebrity crush. What was going on in that moment? Was it something the person was doing that caught your eye or was it the way they looked back at you meeting your gaze? Was it a song sung by a performer on TV or was it a kind act you witnessed that came and went unnoticed to them? Was it love at first sight or was it simply lust that attracted you? Now think of the times it has both happened at the same time; love and lust both pulling you in closer. Remember what you saw in your prom date for the first time all those years ago or how you looked down the aisle at your spouse?

I want you to feel the same way I felt while I created these pieces. Similar to the way a child sees a giant lollipop for the first time or what a car enthusiast sees in their favorite restored classic. Attraction is such a strong invisible thing that can physically move two strangers together in unscripted conversations. Unfortunately no matter the outcome, that attracting moment doesn't last. It's merely a flash of the highest inspiration and if you’re lucky it becomes a huge memory. I want to catch it like a perfectly timed photograph so you can frame it on your wall.

There was a time I would have to say when it all came together here in Youngstown. Where bewilderment, attraction, and grace all came to a point for a moment and would have forever inspired my work. Everytime I make a painting I’m trying to get back to a feeling inside a memory.

I was sitting by my lonesome at a bar in downtown Youngstown with a few other punk rock-type scabs at the bar. When in walks in a group of females dolled up in outfits out of the 50’s. It was a dance troop initiating a Swing Dance Night in the bar. These women did a demonstration for the lucky few of us stunned looking over our fourth or fifth pints. We had no idea what was going on. Next thing I knew a gorgeous woman steps straight out of a noir film and pulls me off my bar stool. She was teaching me how to swing dance. A few spins, dips, and twirls into the dance I look around and there are mohawks, chains, dresses, ruby-red lipstick, black boots, and high heels flying around in a rythm, a tornado of opposites. These women who probably spent as much time in the evening getting dressed as we did drinking were peeling us off the bar and teaching us something of grace. It was intoxicating, I was hooked and I don’t know what I was even hooked on."
